Spirit’s Seasons, A Series – Basketball, Episode III

FOLLOWING THE GAME’S Pledge of Allegiance and handshakes all around, Larry controlled the tip. Sylix received the batted ball and hit Tyee with a pass like a frozen rope as he moved down the sideline. The Tulameen boy jump-stopped at the 3-point line and launched a perfectly arcing attempt that fell through the bottom of the net, swish! Four of the next five times down the court Tyee repeated the successful shot at the arc, and just like that, 15-2. Coyote called time. The Sasquatch had started the game with a 2-3 zone defense. Coach Chilcotin reasoned that the solid zone could help keep his boys out of foul trouble. But he realized that another approach was in order. He assigned Hondo the task of guarding Tyee man-to-man, as closely as possible, and instructed him to prevent Tulameen from even touching the ball. The rest of the team members were instructed to play a diamond or 1-2-1 zone defense.

Throughout the rest of the half both boys picked up fouls as the officials called Hondo for holding Tyee, and Tyee was caught pushing off Hondo a few times. The other members of both teams started scoring and, with evenly distributed points at half-time, the Sinkiuse team led 38-25 as the boys headed to their locker rooms. Tyee, Larry, Hondo, and Phillip had three fouls apiece. Both coaches gave the same speech, We can’t pick up any more fouls, play smart, don’t foul, be quick but, slow the game down and use the clock, and above all, don’t get caught fouling!

Throughout much of the second half both teams did slow the game down. Both teams tried to use up as much clock as possible before attempting a shot. But by the fourth quarter most players had two or three fouls and some kids had four fouls. With four minutes left before the final buzzer and trailing 55-40, Hondo got whistled for his fifth foul and the Sasquatch were playing four against five. But something strange and discernible started to happen. It was almost miraculous as if the Sasquatch were playing with a new found mission, the role of an underdog, possibly an extra rush of adrenalin. The three Smohalla guards were moving like a blur, stealing the ball, driving the length of the court, and outscoring the Bobcats. Levi, Caleb, and Cole were playing far above their previous skills. But Spirit was perceptive. He instinctively knew what was happening. So, as a show of sportsmanship that would certainly calm the Sasquatch, he pulled Chase-In-Winter off the court and had him sit next to Peoples. But the lead official blew his whistle, approached Spirit, and declared, “You can’t pull a player off the floor.”

“I’ve never heard that before, I think it’s just good sportsmanship.”

“Don’t matter, it’s the rules. If ya pull him off the court both the boys on the bench will be ineligible to enter the game, it’s in the book. You can have him stand …

Types of Scavenger Hunts

Scavenger hunts have been popular with youth, adults, and children throughout the ages. With the recent popularity of “The Amazing Race” and reality TV shows, scavenger hunts are just as popular today as they have ever been. They can take a variety of forms, be modified with different rules, and be tailored to a variety of themes, locations, and age groups. They are great for building community, fostering team work, and generating lots of fun and excitement.

Here are some of the more common types of Scavenger Hunts.

Classic Scavenger Hunt

This is the traditional scavenger hunt where participants are given a list of items to retrieve and bring back within a designated time limit. Examples include both common and hard to find items like: a basketball, an 8 track tape, a spork, a coin with a specific date, or a postage stamp. The scavenger hunt consists of a list of the selected objects and some rules. Variations may allow photos of an object to replace the actual object or creative substitutions. The rules may forbid the purchase of items or restrict the participants from going to their own homes or malls to collect items. Various points are assigned to the objects based upon the difficulty necessary to obtain them. Themes can focus the items and add fun to the hunt. For example, a superhero scavenger hunt may require them to bring costumes, comics and other collectibles related to specific superheroes.

Destination Unknown

In this scavenger hunt, clues lead participants to a specific destination where they find a clue to the next location. Successive clues will ultimately lead them to a specific location where there is a party. Clues may be in the form of riddles or directions to follow and serve to guide participants to famous landmarks and other locations. Sometimes helpers are positioned at the various locations to hand out the next clue. In other places the clues may be hidden under a park bench or other inconspicuous locations where the public is not likely to remove them.

Find the Pieces Scavenger Hunt

Hide pieces of a jigsaw puzzle around the designated game area. This could be a school, a church, or even a local park. Instead of a puzzle you can use any machine or object that has multiple pieces. As an Example, for a Halloween party you could purchase plastic skeletons and disassemble them, hiding the bones before the party starts. Let the participants search for them and then reassemble the skeleton. Hide batteries, a tape recorder, and a cassette tape with a pre-recorded message describing the next clue. Hide chess pieces, ingredients for a meal, or even clothes and accessories. One of the activities may be to dress up as superman, but to do so they must collect several pieces of the costume which have been strategically hidden around the game area.

Information Scavenger Hunt

Instead of retrieving objects, or taking pictures, participants in this scavenger hunt must find information. It could be the date …

7 Reasons to Be Proud to Be Irish

Sometimes with all the financial scandals we are currently hearing about we lose sight of our true Spirit. Whether this is Irish, American, English, Scottish or whatever, it is important to remind ourselves of our true Spirit which is far greater than any recession and far deeper than any surface financial storm. In fact perhaps this very financial storm is the catalyst for realigning us with our true Spirit and values. What might some of these values be? What do you think they are? What top three values would you like your nationality to have?

Here’s some important values which make me proud to be Irish:

1. Generosity of Spirit – “when I’m hungry give me someone to feed” is what I believe Mother Theresa said. Perhaps because of our history, in particular the famine 1847, when 1 million Irish people died and 1 million had to emigrate (a quarter of the Irish population at the time) we’ve been very generous in giving to causes around the world and many Irish people have dedicated their whole lives to helping the much less well off. Lets show the world that our generosity far surpasses any greed that has been highlighted in recent times.

2. Friendliness – “Cead Mile Failte”, this of course means 100,000 welcomes. The Irish have been known as a very friendly race and indeed it has been an attraction for many tourists over the years. Let us open our hearts once more to welcome everyone into this island of ours and let them experience true Irish friendliness, fun and great value!

3. Family Values – “The strength of a nation derives from the integrity of the home” – Confucius. The future of the human race is in our children, not our property or share portfolio. Most of all we MUST give our children our love and our time. In giving them our time, a resource which none of us will ever get back we demonstrate at a deep level how important they are to us and how much we love them. Up to quite recent times the Irish were known to be quite laid back and we had a lot more time for our families and other people. Let us give more time to our families and as a society lets reward this rather than rewarding those who sell unscrupulous financial investments. We must learn to teach our children well because the very future of humanity depends on it.

4. Sporting Values – the Irish play sport all over the world whether its gaelic football, soccer, rugby, boxing, athletics, cycling and so on. And there’s one thing for sure, we are known for having a lot of fun around it. We bring music and “craic” to it all whether we win or lose. Lets keep celebrating this!

5. A deep sense of History – there’s literally millions of people around the world, in particular in the USA that claim Irish decent, far more than there are Irish …

Why It’s Important to Keep Up With the News

Many people neglect the news and are unaware of what is going on in the world around them. This is a large mistake however and a good understanding of current affairs is actually crucial for many reasons. Here we’ll look at just why it’s so important to follow the news and why you should look for a news blog, website or news channel to provide you with regular updates.

Firstly the news can sometimes affect you. You might not think that news is constantly about crises in other countries, or things that have happened to other people, but more likely the news reflects a policy or government decision that will be utilising your tax money and that will affect your economy. The government is designed to work for us and this is the true idea of a democracy, however it’s the press and the blogs and news channels that allow us to actually see what the government are doing and that allow for democracy to work. People fought and died for freedom of speech and the freedom of the press that comes with it, and so to turn your back on it is a serious mistake. When it comes to an election, the news through the last few years should be the main thing influencing your decision.

At the same time the news can often affect you directly. For example the recent news of the ash cloud covering the sky meant that many flights had to be cancelled or couldn’t go ahead. However only those who read a news blog or watched a news channel would have known not to go ahead and book any last minute flights. Even on a more basic level, the news often includes the weather, and this will affect whether we get wet when we head outside or remember to bring an umbrella.

The news is also very important for conversation. If something big has happened in the news then this is a sure fire way to spark up a conversation with someone where there might otherwise have been an awkward silence. At the same time in a group of people talking about the news you won’t want to be the only one who isn’t aware of what’s going on as this can make you feel very isolated and out of touch. At the same time you might lose respect from the other people who value the news and current affairs more.

Of course the news is also just interesting and while there will be a lot you’re not interested in, there will always be something that catches your attention and that is related to one of the fields you find interesting. If you like celebrities and gossip then this always finds its way on to the news, while meanwhile you’ll also likely find information about sports and cutting edge science.

If you want to stay up to date with the news but struggle to find the time, new media technologies are now allowing many …

The Real Deal on NFL Football Helmets

The NFL is one of the most loved sports in the USA. However, there is an equipment which is often taken for granted its relevance to the game. People and football fans often think that this thing is just a mere accessory helping make their football players look authentic and hard core action packed while out there on the field. What many people do not realize is just how vital this particular football accessory plays while strapped onto a player's head.

NFL football helmets are very important. Without it, players can not play and will certainly not be allowed to play on field. American football is a highly contact sport which nobody can predict but the players themselves. And these players can only predict the output of a game while all of them are but seconds away from scrambling to make a perfect touchdown. NFL football helmets are like the real deal when it comes to football. With all of the tackles which must be faced and dodged, every football player's safety relations on the helmet protecting their heads.

This is also the reason why NFL football helmets are made with such cut-throat designs. Some players and teams even ask their helmets to be customized. Although it is considered to be very important, NFL football helmets can not contain too much features which can take its toll on the helmet's weight. After all, the player will have to be able to wear it through the duration of a play with much ease. It does not help that another unnecessary discomfort will be added while a player concentrates on the game's play.

As you may notice, NFL football helmets look complex and they sometimes look very different from other football helmets. In general, you will see that chin straps are made from only the best quality materials. Chin straps are made from materials which will really hold the helmet in place. Sometimes, NFL football helmets also come already with its own mouth piece although is not really required. The state of the art designs of these helmets really makes it unique and helps it stand out from the rest of the crowd.

As great as these helmets seem to be, it also requires maintenance to ensure that it will always be in great shape. Helmets, even the ones being used in NFL games, can undergo wear and tear if not properly tend to. This is why one some levels it can be considered that these particular types of helmet are somewhat high maintenance in their own right. Typically, reconditioning is necessary to make sure that these helmets are kept in tip-top shape regardless of what games in need to cruise through.

Apart from reconditioning, these helmets also undergo a specific disinfectant procedure so that they can be maintained clean as always. After all, helmets also get dirty while on field. All that mixture of perspiration and mud is definitely something every player will not be psyched to experience in every game. …

Advantages of Being Tall in Combat Sports

Being exceptionally tall has many advantages, but what about when it comes to sporting endeavour, in particular when it comes to combat sports. So just what are the plus and minus points of height when it comes to boxing, wrestling, mixed martial arts etc. How can a competitor use extra height to gain a competitive advantage over an opponent who has a different physical make up.

Let’s look at the key attributes of the taller sports person. First and foremost is the ability to reach and step further. Being taller implies longer arms and legs, in turn meaning longer reach ability and longer stride ability. This is a tremendous advantage in many sports, but in particular combat sports. In most fight type sports the ability to strike your opponent and not get hit is the key to winning. Using a superior reach is the most common way to do this. If for example in boxing, the taller boxer has the ability to keep the fight at long distance i.e. both boxers are always separated by a distance that allows the taller boxer to land his punches, but the smaller boxer keeps falling just short with his punches, the taller boxer must win. This is easier said than done. Mike Tyson would be a classic example of a relatively small boxer who regularly defeated opponents much taller than him. Tyson, in his younger days, had enough power and strength to close the distance to his opponents, by stepping inside and often through punches, to land his own punches, usually with devastating effect. Thomas Hearns would be a classic case of a tall boxer, usually fighting much smaller men. His fights against Hagler, Hearns and Duran during the eighties are classic tall fighter versus smaller fighter match ups. Things didn’t always go his way in all those fights, but he was against some of the best middle weights of any generation.

A sport such as Wrestling (Olympic, not the staged WW whatever events) is a typical case of being tall not being such a big advantage. In fact shorter levers, a more compact powerful physique and excellent balance is probably more advantageous in this sport. Similarly with Ju-Jitsu and all those grappling type combat sports, being taller than your opponent is not a significant advantage at all. The recent popularity of Mixed Martial Arts events such as UFC demonstrates the advantage the taller combatant has when the fight is in a standing and striking mode. But this advantage is usually negated when the contest develops into a grappling style fight, on the ground.

Like many things in life, being tall has many advantages. Being tall in combat sports is no different.…
