The 8 Basic Punches Of Western Boxing

The sport of western boxing has had a lot of fans since the early days of the late 19th century in America. Even when organized public fighting matches were still considered a crime punishable by time in jail and a fine they drew a horde of spectators. But then again, who doesn’t love a good fight?

Fighting way back then looked a whole lot different than fighting currently does. Over the years more science and research has been done, into human movement and fitness. The upright postures with hands held low that make early boxing easy to identify have been changed over the years.

In the 21st century, fighters appear more fluid, more aggressive, and in a crouched stance. Legs bent, body weight forward on toes. Unlike the fighters of yesteryear, today, a fighter today uses his hands as well as shoulders to obscure and protect that path that leads right to the “kisser”, or “button”.

The fighters main weapons continue to be his hands, while they also use a lot of holding, pushing, and leaning on strategies to wear down their opponent. With those weapons, there is generally an arsenal of 8 specific punches that a good fighter will develop. From these eight punches there is an incredible array of “combinations” that can be thrown as he tries to get past the defenses of the opponent in the opposite corner.

This list is a brief description of those 8 punches of boxing:

  1. “The Jab”. This punch is thrown from the lead hand. It’s quick, sometimes powerful and is used either to “keep your opponent off of you”, or to judge his distance while setting up a power punch.
  2. “The Cross”. This punch is from the rear hand and is a straight power punch. Usually used as a counter when your opponent throws a punch from the opposite side.
  3. “The Hook To The Jaw”. This punch comes from the lead hand from the side while keeping your elbow bent. The object is to come around the defense and connect with the side of the opponents face. The hook carries a lot of knock out power.
  4. “Rear Hand Hook”. Similar to the previous, because this punch comes from the rear, it’s generally used as a counter punch when your opponent has “left himself open”. The target could be the head as well as the body.
  5. “Lead Hook To the Body”. Again, from the lead hand “hooking” into the body. The target is mostly the ribs or kidney. This particular punch is so devastating that it, when landing successfully, has ended many, many fights with opponent still conscious.
  6. “The Overhand Punch”. This punch is a power punch also. It comes from the rear hand. It’s similar to the cross, however, it has a slight arcing motion to it. The purpose of this punch is go over the opponents targeting the face of the opponent. Imagine a baseball pitcher’s form and you’ll have the basic concept.

Optimal Arousal Levels for Inspiring Sports Performances

Different sports will require different optimal arousal to reach inspiring sports performances. In a game of American Football, rugby and weight lifting as you can imagine, the higher the arousal level, the greater will be strength, aggressiveness and power generated. In this type of sports, it is about overpowering your opponents for peak performance in sport. In other finer sports like archery, shooting and gymnastics, high anxiety levels may impede peak performance in sports rather than promote. Under such conditions, it is necessary to reduce our arousal levels to appropriate levels for sporting success. Competitions are unique situations that raise the excitement of the occasion. So it is necessary in all competition to manage the arousal levels experienced by athletes.

Increasing Arousal Levels

1. Listening to inspirational music

Music is a power tool to raise your levels of arousal and achieve inspiring sports performances. Prior to competition, you can listen to truly inspirational music to increase your arousal to the optimal levels. Listening to sound tracks of Rocky or similar themed music has a tremendous effect of arousal level. Be careful not to overdo it though. Know your arousal limits and maintain it there.

2. Psyching up through self-talk and team talk

Team and self-talks are also power techniques to raise arousal levels and improve inspiring sports performances. Team talks are usually carried out by the coach or captain who must skilled in this to raise the stake for the team before the game. Loud language, purposeful language and aggressive gestures are often associated with a good rousing team talk. But the best ingredient of a good motivational team talk is actually the sharing of a common objective and feeling amongst team mates. This will help everyone feel united and passionately driven for the game. In individual sports, you can either do it yourself through self-talk or more effectively through another person that is closely related to you. The coach or parent often plays this role.

3. Visualization of powerful events

You can also use visualization of powerful events to raise the tempo before your game for inspiring sports performances. For example, if you are a linebacker, you can picture your best ever sack you have done. Repeat the images over and over again so that your mind is flooded with powerful emotions of arousal. Another form of visualization that might help is envisioning the final successful outcome of your game, soaking in the celebratory atmosphere associated with winning.

Decreasing Arousal Levels

1. Breathing control

When there is a need to lower arousal level, breathing control techniques might be helpful to achieve inspiring sports performances. Once you find your heart racing too fast or you start to feel butterfly in your tummy, switch your attention and focus to your breathing. Boxing Gyms and How to Survive Them – 3 Golden Rules

Golden Rules to Survive Them AND Learn How to Box!

Being an active, competitive boxer requires that you attend one of the many boxing gyms scattered throughout many towns and cities across many countries all across the world. Even in those countries where professional boxing is banned (for example Norway and Sweden), there are a wealth of well-run amateur boxing gyms where the skills and techniques of the noble art are taught for a very reasonable price. To learn how to box is really one of life's cheaper pursuits (assuming the cost is not measured in blood, sweat and tears of course).

It being the case then that there are many boxing gyms and it will only be by a quirk of geography, a lack of desire to box competitively or some medical-type reason (for example acute agoraphobia) that might prevent you from joining one of the community boxing gyms to learn how to box, I wanted to write a short article to provide 3 simple rules to observe if you are about to cross the threshold of a local boxing gym in your area.

Without further ado, let's go over the simple considerations that will allow you to cope with the new environment of the boxing gym and learn how to box in double-quick time.

Rule 1:

Do not feel the need to go and spend piles of cash on sparring gloves, head-gear, boxing boots and so on. Keep it simple in the short-term. You will need as a minimum training clothes and shoes, boxing wraps and shower gear. That's it. You do not even need in the short term to buy bag gloves or a skipping rope as the gym will provide these. As time passes and you make a decision as to whether you like being around boxing gyms, you can spend your dollars on the bag gloves, skipping rope, boxing boots and gum shield. All other gear will continue to be provided by the gym.

It is worth understanding that you might want to avoid buying gloves for sparring as the coach will often want to assess their suitability to be used in his or her boxing ring. On a number of occasions I've had to disappoint boxers by refusing to allow them to wear their freshly imported and eye-wateringly expensive gloves for sparring because of the lack of padding in the knuckle area. A boxing coach's primary responsibility is to the safety of the boxers, so they will not mind at all leaving you with a very, very expensive pair of bag gloves rather than allow those gloves into their sparring ring where the risk of injury to one of his or her boxers will increase.

Building and Managing a High School Soccer Program

The following interview is with Coach Bill Bratton, who was my Soccer Coach at Cross Keys High School in Atlanta, Georgia for the school year 1989-1990. I asked him for an interview to share his thoughts on Soccer. He has been involved with Soccer for over 25 years so I wanted to pick his brain on the subject.

Stafford:

Hello Coach, you have been coaching high school soccer for over 25 years. How did you first get involved in the sport?

Coach Bill Bratton:

Hi Stafford and thank you. Well I started coaching soccer in 1982 in DeKalb County in my first year teaching at Sequoyah High. The previous coach had left and the school needed someone to coach. The principal offered me the opportunity to take over the program.

Stafford:

How was that experience for you and how did you prepare for this new role as a High School Soccer Coach?

Coach Bill Bratton:

I will admit I had never played or coached soccer before. In the off season I spent time preparing and learning by reading books and going to clinics. I will also admit that the players knew more about the skills, the formations and what it took to play the game than I did but it was the coaching organization of putting a team together to play as a team that was my strength. I really enjoyed coaching soccer once I mastered the knowledge I needed.

Stafford:

How long did you coach at Sequoyah and how did you end up at Cross Keys?

Coach Bill Bratton:

I coached Sequoyah for 4 years before DeKalb began a consolidation program and I transferred to Cross Keys in 1986. I had the privilege of coaching the Keys program for the next 20 years. I earned my Georgia class D coaching license as well as a Class C level National Coaching license from the USSF. The situation at Cross Keys was much like Sequoyah, they needed a new soccer coach and the AP who would become the principal offered me the position.

Stafford:

How was the situation at Cross Keys, and what did it take to build the program?

Coach Bill Bratton:

It took hard work and discipline to build the program. My job involved rebuilding a program. It had lost its organization, discipline was amuck, and the program wasn’t winning, just 2 years from finishing 3rd in the state. I had to incorporate discipline into the program and to teach players what playing on a school competitive team meant and was needed to win. This progress was going to take many years to complete.

Players would tell me “Coach we just want to play”. Cross Keys was a highly transient school. It was a constant rebuilding progress every year. They had no understanding of playing as a team, that they had to come to practice, to commit, and to be successful they had to play as a team. As I look back that took 2-3 years to get across. …

Basketball: the Object of the Game

Basketball is a fast paced game played on a 94-by-50 foot court (NBA) with 1 basket on opposite sides.

The game starts when the official tosses the ball between two players, one from each team, in the middle of the court. This is also referred to as the tip off. The other 8 players stand at specific places outside the mid-circle. The jumpers will try to tip the ball to any of their team members to gain the first possession.

The goal is to score more points than their opponents.

In the professional setting, the game is divided into 2 halfs or 4 quarters. Each quarter is 12 minutes long.

During each possession, the offensive team has a time limit to shoot the ball in the basket. This is called the shot clock. The NBA rule allows 24 seconds for each possession. In college basketball, the shot clock is set for 35 seconds.

There are basically 2 ways to shoot and score in a basketball game: shooting when the ball is in play and from the free throw line.

There are several ways to score during play. You can either take a perimeter shot or drive toward the basket. You can score 3 points if you shoot the ball beyond the arc. There are also variations for jump shots including from the baseline, the key, fade away, hook shot, and more. Variations of shots made inside the paint include dunk, layup, and tip-in.

Free throws are earned when the opposing team committs a technical foul or a personal foul. Two free throw shots are awarded when the opposing team committs a technical foul or a personal foul in the act of shooting or within the team penalty. One free throw shot is given to the player who made a shot and receives a foul in the process.

Each player is allowed to commit 5 personal fouls for each game to continue playing. The 6th foul will automatically force the player to retire for the rest of the game. Each player is automatically out of the game if he receives 2 technical fouls. The team is allowed to commits 5 fouls for each quarter before entering the penalty. Every foul made inside the penalty will put their opposing team to shoot free throws. 

In the event where the scores are tied at the end of the fourth quarter (or at the end of the regulation period), a 5-minute overtime period is played. If the score is still tied at the end of the overtime period, a second overtime will be played, and so on… until a team wins a game.

The Art of Defense in Basketball

In playing basketball, each player must be conditioned to change quickly from offense to defense. This mental trick must be learned before any kind of defense can become operative. Defense is a state of mind. It can be passive, active, weak-kneed, indefinite, or masculine and aggressive. To perform offensive skills properly, an athlete must be relaxed and confident. To execute defensive skills properly, he must be the very antithesis of relaxation.

He must be tense, coiled, and aggressive. He must be in a fighting frame of mind. He must be combative. This switching mentally from offense to defense requires time and experience. The difficult task is turning back to relaxed movement for offense. Most athletes can get themselves in a fighting frame of mind.

In the case of football, they have no need to change that mood during the course of the game. Basketball requires the athlete to play a mental game of hop scotch if he is to reach his potential on offense and on defense. Experience and time will help the young athlete develop this ability.

Defense begins as soon as the ball is lost. The player does not wait until he gets to the other end of the floor to begin to think about defense. He begins to think defense at that very instant. Unless he has been given the task of cutting the outlet pass (to stop an opponent’s fast break), his first thought is to reach the other end of the floor as fast as he can run. This run is known as the defensive fast break.

Some teams are known as fast-break (offensive) teams; others are considered to be slow-break teams. Every good basketball team in the nation fast-breaks. They fast break, to the defensive end of the floor. This break should not be a trot or jog. It must be a full speed run. While the defensive player is executing his fast break he is looking up to spot his opponent. Some opponents are very obliging. They will always go into the pivot area or into a certain corner each time. This makes recognition very simple.

Other players are not so obliging. You never know where these men will line up. That is why it is necessary to be skilled and alert at spotting quickly the number and face of an opponent. As soon as you have spotted your man, determine his relationship to the ball. Is he in position to receive and score quickly? Can you reach him in time to defend your basket? Can you help a teammate who is momentarily in trouble?

As soon as you spot your opponent, go to him and assume a defensive stance, a defensive expression, and a defensive attitude. Let him know by your stance, expression, and attitude that you have come to hook up with him completely and without equivocation as long as his team possesses the ball. Let him know that as far as you are concerned, your life depends on stopping him. …

A Look at the Intriguing History of Snowboarding

To say who actually invented the sport of snowboarding would be impossible because people have always loved to slide down a snow-covered hill. Soaring through the snow on some kind of seat or board is nothing new. The ways to enjoy the snow are numerous, and people have devised ways to turn garbage can lids and cardboard into “snow boards” to enjoy an afternoon frolic outdoors. The various ways to glide through snow have become more sophisticated and have evolved into using polished boards or skis in much the same manner as a surfboarder would ride a wave.

There have been many attempts at developing a modern snowboard. In 1965, the “Snurfer” (a word play on ‘snow’ and ‘surfer’) was developed as a child’s toy. Two skis were bound together and a rope was placed at the front end to afford control and stability. Over 500,000 “Snurfers” were sold in 1966 but they were never seen as more than a child’s plaything even though organized competitions began to take place. The year 1969 brought a slightly more sophisticated snowboard based on the principles of skiing combined with surfboard styling.

The “Flying Yellow Banana” was developed in 1977. This was nothing more than a plastic shell covered with a top surface like that of a skateboard, but at the time it was considered a major advance in the little known sport of snowboarding. The first national snowboard race was held in the area outside Woodstock and was known as “The Suicide Six.” The race consisted of a steep downhill run called The Face in which the main goal was probably mere survival.

Snowboarding continued to increase in popularity over the next several years. In 1985 the first magazine dedicated specifically to snowboarding hit the news stands with huge success and furthered the popularity of this exciting sport. Hoards of fans began to organize regional events and pretty soon snowboarding events were held in all parts of the world. In the year 1994 snowboarding was finally declared an Olympic event, much to the delight of fans. The not-so-new sport of snowboarding was finally recognized and meant a huge victory for serious snowboarders across the globe.

A collection of snowboarding tricks and stunts was released on video in 1996. Filmed in Alaska, the breathtaking beauty and captivating snowboarding techniques featured in the video exposed snowboarding to a new generation, and by 1998 snowboarding constituted almost 50% of all winter activity. Today, nearly all ski resorts accept snowboarders. There are still a few holding on to the past but this is unlikely to continue as the number of snowboarders continually increases.

The San Jose Flea Market is still family owned and operated. Although there is now a staff of 500 service employees and controlled by Ogden Entertainment Services, the Bumb family oversees all management of the market. Brian Bumb Sr., son of George Bumb Sr., now supervises and is part owner (15.7%) of the San Jose Flea market among his other brothers, George Bumb Jr., and Timothy Bumb, who each have 14.1% ownership. Other members of the Bumb family own vendor stalls, work at food carts, and have managerial positions within the flea market. Joe Bumb, cousin of Brian Bumb, owns American Precious Metals, an open-air store within the flea market that now sells mostly jewelry. Joe Bumb store revenue totals approximately $100,000 a month. On any given Sunday, a visitor can find Joe and a handful of his children helping their father at the family store.

The eight miles (13 km) worth of aisles allows for over 2000 vendors to sell an array of goods. With a population and land mass larger than some small towns, the flea market is a major contributor to the income of many Silicon Valley families. Some of the treasures found at the landmark include jewelry, furniture, clothing, fruits, vegetables, shoes, collectables, toys, books, lamps, batteries, car stereo equipment, paintings, power drills, lamp shades, lipstick, and forks.

Along with the material items sold at the flea market, there are twenty five food vendors. Restaurants sell delicacies from burritos to French fries and freshly cooked meats on the outdoor barbecue in order to satisfy the tastes of the large clientele the Flea Market serves daily. There are also snack carts for shoppers on the run that offer delicious treats. Some of those include mango and pineapple spears on a stick, cold sodas, and churros. The largest section of the Flea Market is Produce Row which stretches a quarter of a mile through the market and contains vegetables and fruit from California farmers.

The atmosphere is like none other. To accompany the sweet and savory smells of the food, there is the sound of constant music playing. Since the Flea Market attracts people from a wide range of backgrounds and ethnicities, the songs played from vendor stands reflect the Market varying tastes. So, it is no surprise that an authentic Mexican mariachi band will be playing as a Beach Boys song is heard a few minutes later. There are also a carrousel, arcade, and three playgrounds for children.

The diversity of people, food, and music at the San Jose Flea Market epitomizes the melting pot on which California Bay Area prides itself.
