There are various types of air rifles classified according to the propulsion method and how the pellets are propelled out of the barrel and they include the pneumatic (PCP), gas ram, spring -piston and CO2
One of the more common types is the spring piston which as it names suggests uses a piston to push a pellet down the range. One does not need to worry about cartridges or pumping and once you have enough practice you can take advantage of its accuracy power and consistency.
When using a pneumatic rifle which is also known as a pump rifle, the pellet is usually propelled out but the use of compressed air. Although pump up rifles are cheaper than the Co2 varieties, they need to be charged or primed for every shot.
Because PCPs draw from a steady supply of pressurised air, they do not need to be recharged as often as the pump rifles although they operate in the same manner. Cost is the main disadvantage of the PCP because one will have to buy a god hand pump or Scuba tank.
A gas ram gun and a spring piston are very similar because they are both cocked using a lever. They only differ in how the pellets are propelled down the barrel. Gas ram rifles are good in that they have along shell life and deliver a smooth shot.
Co2 powered guns though expensive to buy are easier to use as they are powered by CO2 cartridges.
Consider the purpose of the rifle before purchasing it whether it is for hunting, target shooting etc. You will also need to consider the caliber to use and especially in line with the purpose of the rifle.
