The English Championship League-A Guide

The English championship often called the championship, in short, is the division that is ranked the best in the English Football League. It comes second after the premier league in the English Football system. Every year, the teams that finish in the top three in the Championship are promoted to the Premier League and those that come last are relegated to league one.

Formerly known as the Football League first division, its name changed to the Football League Championship in the 2005-2005 season. The team that wins the Championship receives the Football League Championship trophy. The Championship is certainly the most affluent non-top flight division worldwide plus it ranks seventh in Europe in terms of riches. On average about 17,578 fans attend the matches played in the championship, coming second after the German 2 Bundesliga. In the 2017-18 season, the team that won the championship was Newcastle United and the runners up were Brighton. There are three teams that are promoted to the Premier League each year from the English Championship. In the 2016 -17 English Championship standings, Reading and Huddersfield Town will have to play each other in a playoff to decide the team which will be promoted to the Premier League to join Newcastle United and Brighton. The playoffs is a knock-out competition played by the teams that come third to the sixth and the team that wins is promoted to the top-tier football. The third-placed team plays against the team that’s ranked sixth while the team ranked fourth plays against the team that is in position five. The winners from each match play at the Wembley stadium against one another and the winner gets the Championship playoff trophy and is promoted to the Premier League. Currently, Ipswich Town hold the record for being in the championship for the most years. They have been in the English Championship since the 2001-02 season after they were relegated from the Premier League.

The season for the English Championship runs from August to May, and the league comprises 24 teams. Each team plays twice against the rest of the teams in the league. One match is in the home stadium of the team while the other away in the matching team’s stadium. Each team plays 46 games each season. When a team wins, they’re given three points; they get zero points for losing plus if they draw one point. The ranking in the league is based on the points gained. If teams tie in a certain position, the ranking is based on the goals they scored in that season. When two teams are identical in all respects after the season’s end, they are ranked in alphabetical order unless a play-off place, relegation or promotion is at stake.
